Home makeover for Green Bay veteranReporter: Lou Hillman Fox-11 News GREEN BAY - If you can paint, plaster or even fit some plumbing pipes together there is a job with your name on it at 521 N. Ashland Ave. in Green Bay. The 90-year-old home is getting a complete makeover with some 21st Century upgrades. It's all being done to help 36-year-old Mark Meunier. He's an ex-Marine and newly retired National Guardsmen who had been serving since 1990. "We bought the house as a fixer-upper. We started fixing it up when I got married with Dawn and then I Since, he has never had the opportunity to finish renovating his home. That's because, in 2005, while serving in Iraq, he sustained some life changing injuries when a roadside bomb exploded near his truck. "It kind of blew us up in the air a little bit, rolled us a little bit," Meunier said. "I had an ankle fracture. The knee: torn meniscus, torn ACL, several fractures in the wrist, my bicep was torn off my shoulder." It's still hard for Meunier to talk about, because the explosion effectively ended his career in the military. He says he still suffers from extreme physical pain. "Some days I feel so bad, I can't go upstairs." That's why some major upgrades to Meunier's old home are in the works. Rebuilding Together, a non-profit group that assists people with disabilities, has organized the home makeover. "They didn't ask for any of this. It's just the people of this community pulling together saying: 'you may not have asked for this but for your sacrifices, you sure do deserve it'," Mark Bonovetz of Rebuilding Together said. So far, nearly 200 people have volunteered their time. Several companies have also donated thousands of dollars in supplies for the project. Meunier will soon finally have his home. A small reward for the big sacrifices he has made. He said he'd like to take anyone who helped on this project and is interested out on Lake Michigan to fish. Meunier said that's the only way he knows how to thank the volunteers. |
